Break Free shows what the climate movement can do in 2017: Unwavering resistance. Fierce solidarity. Courage by the gigaton.Read more
In the midst of the hottest year in recorded history, tens of thousands of people on 6 continents did something that politicians have not: they took bold, courageous action to keep fossil fuels in the ground.
Each action was unique: from the coal fields of Germany, to the oil wells of Nigeria, to defiant actions against new coal power plant in Indonesia and the Philippines — and many places beyond.
But the purpose was the same: keep fossil fuels in the ground. Build a just transition to a new kind of 100% renewable economy. Do it now.
There has never been a better time than now to break free from fossil fuels. Coal, oil and gas companies are in a financial crisis, the planet is overheating, and — thanks to you, a global resistance is growing to confront the industry wherever they turn.
The following values underpin the global Break Free from Fossil Fuels coalition. Every organisation participating in Break Free and each individual taking part in a Break Free activity needs to agree and adhere to these values.
From fossils to freedom: We seek a just transition to a renewable future built on democratic freedoms and human rights. To avoid the worst impacts of climate change, we need to break free from the grip of fossil fuel corporations and keep coal, oil and gas in the ground. Our actions will translate the growing urgency into collective hope and help bring this vision closer to reality.
Peaceful direct action: Polluting our planet, poisoning its people and destroying its species in pursuit of profit are extreme forms of aggression. But we will not respond to these attacks in kind. The global climate crisis we all face means business as usual is no longer an option. We will confront the fossil fuel polluters creatively but peacefully, even if our resistance is met with violence.
Escalation: Break Free actions will involve varying levels of risk and pressure appropriate to the local context. We are calling time on governments that move too slowly and corporations that have lied for decades about the climate change that confronts us and our children. We will demonstrate the power of people to dramatically accelerate the just transition from fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy and an economic system that is not based on the exploitation of people or the planet.
Mass participation: We encourage participation in Break Free actions from anyone and everyone who adheres to these principles. The world’s women led the way on 21 January, mobilising in solidarity for the protection of everything we hold dear. Following their example, we want to build an open and diverse movement, amplifying the voices of the communities on the frontlines against climate change and fossil fuels. Break Free from Fossil Fuels is not about any individual person or any one organisation, it’s about collectively standing up for a prosperous future on an inhabitable planet for our children and grandchildren.
Global action: We believe it is essential for people around the globe to personally confront the fossil fuel projects causing global warming. We stand united and are determined to show fossil fuel corporations they cannot keep exploring new sources of carbon and polluting our atmosphere. Break Free from Fossil Fuels is an open platform through which people can take action anywhere in the world, using the principles and values above.
